Gundalda to Calliope River Rest Area

A big day today. The boss wanted to get to Rockhampton. We were up by 8 am and on the road by 9.20.  A good road and light traffic.  Our first stop was the historic town of Childers about 120km up the road.

Childers, you may remember is where the The Palace, a backpackers hostel was burnt down in 2000 with the loss of 15 lives , all backpackers. A memorial has been set up in respect of the victims.

A visit to the Info office then the Old Pharmacy Museum.  The Pharmacy was very interesting.  The whole town of Childers is historic dating back to the 1800's.

We were soon back on the road and decided to stop for lunch at Gin Gin Rest Area 2km north of Gin Gin. Many memories floated back to me as I had an accident prior to Gin Gin when I was on my bike ride.  I had 3 stitches in my hand at Gin Gin hospital.

We pushed on up the road after lunch ,stopped again by various roadworks. At one stage we had to get off the road to let two oversized loads pass. Police escorts and pilot cars involved.

Arrived in the small town of Miriam Vale where we refueled then continued on to Boyne River Rest Area.  We decided to continue on to the Calliope River Rest Area.  Arrived by 4.30 and already 50 other vans set up here. Found a spot, set up and had a coffee,  Happy Hour,  no telly,  then bed. On the road again tomorrow.
