Urunga Day 3

The forecast for today was not terribly favorable so we decided to drive to South West Rocks about 75km south of here.

We were up and away by 10.15 am.  Light showers were experienced early in our trip.  The further south we went the weather improved.  Arrived at South West Rocks and went straight to Trial Bay Gaol in Arakoon National Park. The gaol was built in 1886 to house convicts who were expected to build a breakwater nearby. It was closed in 1903 then reopened in 1915 as an internment camp for Germans living in Australia which continued until 1918.
After inspecting the ruins we walked Monument Hill Walk to a monument to the WWI German internees, old graves and a lookout. A 3 km return trip and uphill to the monument. True to form, once at the lookout,  the boss spotted some whales.

Back to the car we then drove around the camping area prior to driving to Smoky Cape Lighthouse about 7km from town.  The walk up to this stage was near perfect, sunshine,  blue skies.  Another strenuous walk up to the lighthouse but worth the walk - spectacular views.  Thankfully no whales that we could see.

It was now time to return home. Out of the town we missed the turnoff to the Pacific Highway initially and couldn't make a u-turn, we were heading for Kempsey.  It had started raining lightly when we came to a turn off to the highway.  By the time we reached the highway the rain was a little heavier. We copped a couple of torrential downpours on the return journey which made life a little difficult.  Ask Evon,  I think she drove more than me.

Arrived back at the van and it was only raining lightly.  After a bit of discussion we went across the road to the pub for a counter tea. A very nice meal and best of all I didn't have to cook or wash up.

Back to the van and it was planning tomorrow, telly and bed.
