Hughenden Day 1

An easy start to the day today,  up about 8.15am,  showered,  breakfast and a load of washing before we set off for the day.

Our destination for the day , Porcupine Gorge,  following an info sheet from the Information Office.  We set the trip metre to 0 at the Info Office and the first Point of Interest (P.O.I.) is the Flinders River.  This is Queensland's longest river,  1004km long. Next P.O.I. where Belemnites (fossilized squid, about 100-110 million years ago). We then passed Matchbox Creek followed by a typical stock route water facility.

Next the Dingo Fence which was erected to protect sheep and cattle from dingoes. This dates back to 1930 and is the longest fence in the world but it is no longer maintained.

Eagle Hill Lookout was next,  then a couple of unmarked graves which have their own stories to tell. We then stopped at Porcupine Gorge Lookout about 1km off the main road.  This is a miniature Grand Canyon.

Back to the main road and headed for the Pyramid Lookout and camping ground.  We walked to the various lookouts then through the campgrounds,  fairly new facilities throughout.  We chose a shelter where we had lunch.

After lunch it was the  return trip back to Hughenden and to another couple of P.O.I. The historic Coolabah Tree and Surveyor's Peg where a couple of explorers had left their mark. We then drove through the Showgrounds Precinct,  the annual Hughenden Camp Draft was held yesterday,  so employees were cleaning up etc.

We then went back to the van and had a coffee,  all the shops in Hughenden were closed - Sunday.  I then went for a bike ride around town while the "boss" relaxed with a book.

No Happy Hour,  it was then tea, telly and bed.  Tomorrow we move to Winton.
