We were up and on the go by 8am. Showered, fed, farewell to Greg and Glenese and on the road by 9.45 am.
Back 40km to the Flinders Highway, turn left and head for Charters Towers. About 20km out from Charters Towers we stopped at the Macrossan Bridge Flood Marker showing the flood heights of the Burdekin River. Arrived at our destination about 11 am, booked in and set up. Early lunch then into town.
First stop was the info office where we picked up some more brochures and good advice on what to see. We hired a self drive CD and map for $5 which described the various points of interest around town. First up Tower Hill and a lookout over Charters Towers. The remains of a gold processing plant was visible. There were about 30 bunkers around the hill where explosives were stored during the war. There was a Seismograph Station to measure earth motions. Also a "Magnetic Hut" which is used to measure changes in the earth's magnetic field.
Off the hill and into town and drove past a number of old buildings. The CD gave us a run down on the history of these places.
Completed the trail then drove out to Burdekin Weir, about 14km out of town. Very picturesque area and great picnic area. Returned to town and back to the van for Happy Hour.
When we checked into this park we were asked if we would like a 3 course dinner for $15, procedes to the local scout group, we said yes. So at 6pm we gathered at the camp kitchen with about 50 others and enjoyed our 3 courses - Soup - pea and ham or pumpkin: Main - 1 sausage, piece of steak, potatoes in jackets, 3 other vegies and gravy: Sweets - a small muffin with custard and cream.
After tea we wandered back to the van where it was a cup of tea, telly then bed.
